GOOD IDEA COMPETITION 2005

Sponsored by The South Cork Enterprise Board

Overview

The Entrepreneurship Societys mission is to promote an entrepreneurial spirit among the student population.

The Good Idea Competition is a fun and easy-to-enter competition which gives UCC students a unique opportunity to test their ability to develop creative business ideas.

Good Idea Competition

The most creative, original, and viable of these ideas win substantial cash prizes. The competition is also a great chance to learn about the entrepreneurial process and to experience first hand some of the issues that accompany the development of an idea into a viable business. Who knows, maybe with a bit of luck some of these ideas will actually go on to become successful new ventures.

How do I enter?

To enter the competition, you must submit an idea to start a business. The idea can be anything but it must be the original work of entrants. The proposal must be 6 pages minimum and should preferably be typed. This is an idea-generation competition and exhaustive research is not required. However, for the purposes of adding some rigour to your entry, you should try to consider some of the following questions in your proposal:

  • Outline of your teams idea. What is your idea? What is unique or special about this idea?
  • Market analysis. Is there a market for your product/service?
  • Financial analysis (P&L, Balance Sheet)
  • Who are your likely competitors?
  • How will you be different from these competitors?
  • Who are your customers?
  • How will you sell this product/service?

But remember, your ultimate challenge is to convince the panel of judges - who are drawn from the business community and academia - that this is a good idea. In other words, your entry should be creative, innovative, clearly communicated, and above all, it should have a realistic chance of success in the marketplace (i.e. no flying cars please.).

Be sure to mention in your entry the name, contact number/address, academic faculty and year of all team members. The deadline for submitting your entry is 17th March 2005, at 5 p.m.. No entries submitted after 5p.m. will be accepted. Winners will be notified before the summer holidays.

Entries should be sent to or dropped off at: Entrepreneurship Societys Box, Boole Library, U C C or alternatively you can submit your entry online here or preferably to the following e-mail address: pat.cronin@esoc.ie.

What are the prizes?

The total prize fund is a guaranteed 1000 euro. Their will be a grand prize of 600* euro for the winner, second prize is a 250* euro cash prize and third will recieve a 150* euro.(*=This is subject to change.)

Who is eligible to enter?

All full-time and part-time UCC students at all levels of education and from any department, registered in the academic year 2004/05 are eligible to enter. A minimum of two people MUST be on each team. The size of a team is not restricted, and neither is the number of entries submitted by a team.
